Hey, baby, wake up from your asleep! We have arrived onto the future and the whole world is become ELECTRONIC SUPERSONIC!

Go check out Wizard #154 for a page-and-a-half on Hench by Todd Casey, featuring a talk with Adam Beechen and brand new color art by Manny Bello. A particular fave: "If you like flicks like Pulp Fiction and Goodfellas that provide an inside look at society's criminal underbelly and the miscreants who make their fortune in sin, then get ready for the supervillain version in Hench." And speaking of Hench, there's a big interview at Sequential Tart with Manny Bello. Tart Adrienne Rappaport gets some good stuff out of Manny.

Also on Sequential Tart this month is Ryan Yount with his skewed and hilarious look at comic book conventions, from his side of the booth as autograph-signin' Super-creator and Chief Box-hauler. Adrienne continues to bat 1.000 with her sixth consecutive review of Demo. Check 'em all out here.

And special thanks to Tony Isabella, who has given Hench five out of five Tonys, but I can't quote you from his awesome CBG review as it hasn't been published yet. But thanks, Tony!

... and here's a link to Loose Cannon #19 (from May 18, 2001), which I spell it out for you how Las Vegas is like comic books.

I've been drivin all night my hand's wet on the wheel; there's a voice in my head that drives my heel

Ken Lowery gives Manny Bello his due about Hench: "Take a closer look: what may at first glance appear to be workmanlike art is in fact technically perfect, unusually expressive, and consistent throughout. Bello's no master artist, not yet, but his storytelling skill is impeccable." Meantime, H over at The Comic Treadmill has some pretty nice things to say about Demo #4.

... and here's a link to Loose Cannon #18 (from May 11, 2001), which features a reminder that the people doing your comics are all just people, too, and that making comics is like bringing order out of chaos. I didn't say it then, but I think so now, that the inherent difficulty of making comics is what makes unfairly dumped-on creators knee-jerk to "Let's see your comic" to the belly-achers. It's not as easy as it looks, walk a mile in your shoes, etc.

A discussion on whether or not word balloons need tails when the speaker is off-panel

What is a speech balloon, but a tangible, visible indication of life, springing forth from the page, that which makes art jump, lines grow, causing the two-dimension to grow into a third? I ask you.

And when a character is absent from view, yet chooses to speak, to make his or her presence known, despite being hidden from view? His balloon of course, speaketh for him, announcing his intent to the world.

Our sole indication of such a presence, a tail on said balloon. His anchor to reality, pointing off-panel, without which he goes spinning off into a vortex of time and space.

Let us give our characters their off-panel balloon tails, shall we?

This is the story of Billy Joe and Bobbi Sue; two young lovers with nothing better to do

Augie De Blieck, Jr. reviews Ursula and True Story, Swear to God: 100 Stories in his Pipeline column for the week. It's not a bad job when you can get the Inveterate Crabapple of Love to give a couple of charming, and, yes romantic books the thumb's-up.

Johnny B reads Hench and True Story, Swear to God: 100 Stories and deems them worthy. I particularly liked that he compared Manny to Barry Windsor-Smith.

Comic Book Galaxy's Chris Allen says "Adam Beechen and Manny Bello are unfamiliar names to me, but I’ll keep my eye out for their work from now on, after the excellent job they did on HENCH, an AiT graphic novel."

... and here's a link to Loose Cannon #17 (from May 4, 2001), where you can read all about how much I liked Pittsburgh.
