Loose Cannon #2, from January 19, 2001.
But I got the pistols, so I'll keep the pesos; yeah, that seems fair.
Dave Fiore keeps track of the
Demo #6 discussion, so you don't have to. Hit that link and follow the chronology of the discussion for a really very compelling exchange.
I also appreciate
Laura Gjovaag expanding her thoughts on
Demo #6 and making a very nice offer to a potential
Scurvy Dogs fan. So if you've been thinking of checking out the Scurv, drop Laura a note.
John Jakala wants to join in on the "raging"
Demo #6 discussion, but can't. Poor bastard.
Randy Lander gives
Demo #6 a rave and a 9/10, which fills me with a warm, fuzzy feeling inside, since I thought Ol' rand-man had forgotten us.
Coming up:
Demo #7, instead of being published two months after #6 for a bit of a breather, is actually coming out three weeks after
Demo #6. People won't be done with exploring Ken's psyche before they're hit with the ramifications of James' crisis of conscience. That's how we roll it around here; throw the next pie before the first one hits.
Also,
True Story, Swear to God: 100 Stories on June 16th, and
Hench (in shops soon) reviewed in the June 18th
Entertainment Weekly.
And one of my blogger pals recently wrote me, not realizing I'd done more than a year's worth of columns for Comic Book Resources. So, by popular demand, a link to the first
Loose Cannon.
Rockin' this party eight days a week
Today's my hundredth post to the daily update. I can't think of anything more fitting than to post up this:
Rumor has it it's from the upcoming Brian Wood Month 2005 release.
Also,
Sean and
Johnny B play "Duelling Banjos" at each other about
Demo #6.
Damn, it feels good to be a gangsta.
I've got an advance copy of
Demo #7 for the first blogger to email me at
larry @ ait-planetlar dot com
who promises me they'll review it the second they get it.
Demo #7 is in-shops June 9.
Laura Gjovaag gives us her take on
Demo #6, and says, "A very powerful little story. I liked this one quite a bit."
Bri Wood has a great interview on Newsarama today, with lots of behind the scenes art from upcoming DEMOs.
Sean T. Collins has the line of the day so far with "it's not a bug; it's a feature."
Kevin Melrose, of Thought Balloons, has started up a sorely-needed resource/hang-out for writers interested in comic books. Called
Scryptic Studios, the site is an ambitious one, seeking to provide discussion forums, columns, etudes on screenwriting, research and a million other things. News, resources, and even script samples are provided. It's a rich and entertaining site, sure to bring out the hate in the usual snarky observers of the scene.
Those of you wanting even more behind the scenes info on
Planet of the Capes (readers of the daily update will surely remember Ken Lowery's look at the initial plot and proposal last month) are invited to read a pdf of the entire
script that Brandon McKinney worked from. Just a few minutes of poking around Scryptic will yield scripts from Steve Niles, Andy Diggle, Marv Wolfman, and Clay Moore, too. Enjoy.
Also, stalwart
Johnny B may have unintentionally started a new meme: foregoing any sort of review and going straight for the back cover blurb for the long-mooted
Scurvy Dogs collection. "
Scurvy Dogs is like what
Captain Blood would be like if the Marx Bros. had kidnapped Errol Flynn, stuffed him in a barrel with an underage hooker and a bottle of tequila, and made the picture themselves!" This one and
Laura Gjovaag's "Oh my. Um. Well. Yikes. Er. Uh. Eh. Ok. These are... bizarre." are almost guaranteed shoe-ins. Shane Bailey, the above-mentioned Kevin Melrose, Dorian Wright, Mike Sterling, Bill Sherman, and Mark Hale should be good for some quotes, too.
Frank Caudill says about
Scurvy Dogs: "I’ve never laughed so hard for just $2.95."
Jared Moraitis says " If Michael Eisner had any balls, he’d issue a decree that
Scurvy Dogs would be sold in that little souvenir shop right outside of the
Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney World that sells all the pirate-themed junk. That’s right, Eisner; I just said that."
Newsarama gives Fabio Moon & Gabriel Ba's
Ursula the treatment in an informative and entertaining interview.
Ken Lowery links to Atom! Freeman's offer to put those AiT books into your hands.
Now's the time for some
LOVE IT!/HATE IT! in the world of comics:
LOVE IT! Respected Southern California retailer Atom! Freeman, of
Brave New World Comics, has made an outstanding offer! If you've had trouble finding copies of
DEMO, Scurvy Dogs, or any other AiT/Planet Lar publications, you're going to want to hit this
link taking you to the delphi discussion forum where we kick back and talk about all sorts of fun things. Now, ordinarily, I don't send people to my forum, because it's a little retreat from the hub and the bub on the rest of the Internet. But Atom's offer is just too good to not tell folks about. So when you call him or email him, just pretend you read it first on my forum instead of here. :)
HATE IT! Naw... nuthin'. I love comics.
LOVE IT! Johnny B takes a look at DEMO #6, the latest
Scurv, and the AiT hardcover.
HATE IT! Comics are still awesome. No hate from me.
LOVE IT! Tom Spurgeon of
The Comics Journal spends ten pages in a comprehensive survey of the AiT/Planet Lar line current to last July. My fave: "If one is to believe the online rhetoric surrounding Young, spending time near the publisher would be roughly equivalent to joining a comic-book fraternity, where comics chat is interspersed with talk of fine liquors to be consumed and aggressively macho movies to be celebrated. Women are welcome, and as much as they show themselves to be good-hearted dames with a sense of humor, they are very nearly worshipped. It's an odd subset of comic-book culture,
but one that might appeal to a wider range of people than many of the tight-knit, specific-interest groups that make up comics' rainbow of dysfunction. (emphasis mine)"
HATE IT! I am just
filled with the milk of human kindness. C'mon! Ten pages in TCJ! How can I have hate for anything?
LOVE IT! Bill Sherman's only issue with
Badlands is that it's under the "historical fiction" section of our website. That's a home run, folks!
HATE IT! Honestly, I'm not that big a fan of eggplant parmesan, but I wouldn't go so far as to say I actually
hate it.
LOVE IT! www.khaaan.com
