10. The Losers
11. Global Frequency
12. Fables
13. Queen and Country

Cliff Biggers (owner of Dr. No's in Marietta, Georgia as well as co-publisher of the insightful and informative Comic Shop News) sent me a quick little email saying that Switchblade Honey was his seventh-best selling original graphic novel of the year. Which is pretty cool on its own, but even more so when you realize that SH was only published in July. So a tip of the cap to Cliff and his customers, and in honor of those guys and gals with obviously good taste, I'll let slip that SH has sold out of its massive first edition and is going back to press on Monday.

Also sold out of its first edition and going back to press is Bri Wood and Becky Cloonan's Channel Zero: Jennie One. Not a bad way to start off the New Year!

Today's Recommended Book is:

Justin Green's Sign Game ISBN 0-944094-14-7

A collection of strips originally run in a sign painter's industry trade magazine, each one contains a nugget of wisdom universally applicable to the freelance artist. In fact, those who think they know how to successfully and artistically letter a comic book page, for example, just because they have access to a Mac and some free fonts they scammed from the Internet would really benefit from an intensive study of the principles and suggestions and work-arounds entertainingly delivered, painlessly, in Green's book.

Apparently still available despite its 1995 copyright date, if you can't get it at your local comic shop, a quick email to the publisher, ST Publications, should set you right up.

In the spirit of the New Year:

Just a reminder to press, pundits, columnists, self-appointed comics industry watchdogs, and assorted bloggers: a quick email to

Larry, Ryan, or Mimi

(depending on whether or not you want to fact-check some creative development/procedural, production, or business-related questions) can save you some small embarrassment resulting from posting your opinion as fact.

We're all really very easy to get ahold of and are quite charming and accessible, and it makes you look like you know what you're talking about. It's win-win for everyone.

In the latest WIZARD:

Which indie creator will be a household name by the end of '04?

Brian Wood checks out of his design job at Rockstar Games to pursue a full-time career in comics - which means 2004 will bring more urban revolutionaries and gun-wielding bike messengers sticking it to the man with fiery rhetoric, hot lead, and breakneck action sequences.

An innovative storyteller, Wood's tales suck you in with intense action and leave you with a profound message to chew on as you gasp for air when it's all over. Between the 12-issue Demo series from AiT/Planet Lar (#3 hits in January), where Wood shows what kids with superpowers would do in the real world (they're not going to throw on tights!) and his graphic novel The Couriers 02: Dirtbike Manifesto (also in Janurary from AiT/Planet Lar), where he teams with artist Rob G for another installment of John Woo-style action mayhem, Wood's name will soon be on a par with those of Brian Michael Bendis and Brian K. Vaughan!

Starting off the New Year a little early, we've set up the daily AiT/Planet Lar update. Production Co-ordinator Ryan Yount is putting the finishing touches on Bri Wood and Becky Cloonan's Demo #3, and we'll be sending that off to Quebecor tomorrow.

Make sure to check out the News 9/Daily Oklahoman Top Ten Graphic novels of 2003 list, where Last of the Independents comes in at the Number One slot, and Channel Zero: Jennie One and The Couriers share the Number Eight position. Our books sure are in some good company on this list!

New Comics Day is on Friday, this week, and you can get Stuart Moore and Ryan Kelly's etude on the giant robot thing, called, naturally enough, Giant Robot Warriors:

Ask for it by name.
