Carlos Hernandez Fisher reviews
Scurvy Dogs over at Laura Gjovaag's place. One of the things I love about all the
Scurv reviews I've read is the apologetic tone they share. The recurring theme of nearly all of the reviews has been, "Dear Jesus, this comic is substandard BUT GOD HELP ME I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!" Carlos was particularly entertaining to me in that he wrote: "In sum, really good but not quite great. I found the book deliriously funny in parts, rivalling some of my favourites like
Rex Mantooth, My Monkey's Name is Jennifer, and
Barry Ween for lines and scenes that make me put down the book for laughing so hard. Concepts and lines like Vikings from the future, "pigeons of the sea," the king of the hobo mafia, and Menudo Island could only come from some sort of demented genius, and I mean that in the nicest way."
Seriously, there's so much crap being published and trees are being killed for pretty much no reason other than to bolster market share, so if "some sort of demented genius" makes you "put down the book for laughing so hard" and ends up "really good but not quite great," then I'd say our scurvy job here is through. Ryan and Drew will take "really good" any day, demented geniuses that they are...
